The Government has responded to the Science and Technology Committee regarding ‘The big data dilemma’ report which was produced by the Committee on 12 February 2016.

The Government provided responses to the 14 recommendations made by the Committee and these include, most importantly, the agreement to the establishment of a Council of Data Ethics.

The Government also agreed that it would not immediately introduce criminal penalties for serious data breaches and will not introduce compulsory data-protection audits of local authorities.

In the response, the Government has also reiterated its commitment to publish later this year the National Innovation Plan, which will lay out how the UK will be ‘at the forefront of using the power of data to drive innovation’.
