Manifesto Funding Pledges ‘would all fall short’

The Nuffield Trust has concluded that none of the NHS funding pledges made in the general election manifestos will meet the future needs of the health service. As reported in the Guardian, the NHS budget would reach £135.3 billion, £132.2 billion and £131.7 billion under Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives respectively. The Office for Budget Responsibility says funding would need to reach £155 billion to deliver the 4% a year above inflation increases the NHS would need to cope with future demand and costs, and £137 billion to stay in line with GDP.
