Trusts Overspend by £770 Million

A Health Service Journal analysis of trust figures has concluded that NHS providers overspent by £770 million last year; despite receiving £1.8 billion of ‘bailout’ funding. The government has refused to allow NHS Improvement to publish the official figures because of ‘purdah’ ahead of the general election. The Nuffield Trust told the Guardian the ‘real’ deficit was higher, because the £770 million figure didn’t take account of accounting measures. The NHS has been told to eliminate its acute deficit to create headroom to tackle the Five Year Forward View agenda.
