Department of Health: Annual Assessment of the NHS Commissioning Board (known as NHS England)

Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Health, has issued a written ministerial statement (WMS) on NHS England performance across 2016-17. The statement outlines his annual assessment of NHS England for 2016-17, draws on and responds to its Annual Report and Accounts 2016-17, which are also available.

The WMS welcomes progress on delivering the Five Year Forward View and Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships while noting that more work is needed on:

  • Improving quality of care
  • Access and safety
  • Financial sustainability

On cancer, the management in delivery of the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF) was commended and the report welcomed the work completed, with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) implementing a new operating model for the CDF, under which 25 drugs treating 42 indications are currently being accessed by patients. However, the Government’s report finds that there are challenges, particularly in relation to the delivery of the cancer element of the 100,000 Genomes Project due to a restricted flow of samples.
