Department of Health report highlights care staff shortfall after Brexit

A report from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has highlighted the risks to the UK care system of losing smooth access to EEA workers when the UK leaves the EU.

At present 150,000 (or 5% of) NHS staff are from the EEA, however this is much higher in certain professions such as registered nurses in social care, where the figure is 16%, and where there are already an estimated 90,000 vacancies.

The Government has announced 5,000 new nursing associates via apprenticeships in 2018, rising to an extra 7,500 in 2019, in a bid to mitigate staffing issues, but these new trainees will take a number of years to come through the system, raising short-term risks.

The report warns that if shortfalls are not mitigated, then the burden of social care may begin to fall on families rather than nurses and professionals, and warns that people may be forced to leave employment in order to care for relatives.
