NICE to charge for HTA appraisals

MAP understands that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has finalised plans for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to begin charging for conducting Health Technology Assessments (HTAs). The decision comes following DHSC’s review of responses to its consultation on the proposals, which concluded in September and is captured on the DHSC website here.

The changes will come into effect in April 2019, and will cover Single Technology Appraisals (STA), Highly Specialised Technology evaluations (HST), Fast Track Appraisals (FTA), Rapid Reviews, and Multiple Technology Appraisals (MTAs).

HTA Type Cost Cost for small company*
STA / HST £126,000 £31,500
FTA / Rapid Review £88,000 £22,000
Standard MTA £188,000 £47,000

*A small company is defined as in section 382 of the Companies Act, 2006, i.e. with a turnover less than £10.2 million, balance sheet total less than £5.1 million, or not more than 50 employees.
