The Academic Health Science Networks (AHSN) and the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) have launched a report on the medical technology landscape, to help companies to navigate the innovation pathway in order to access the NHS.
The report contains checklists and action points relevant to every aspect of the innovation pathway, including creation, development, regulation, evaluation, market access, commissioning and adoption. It also explains that medical technologies must be incorporated into larger service redesigns in order to demonstrate their value and impact to the NHS.
The NHS spends around £6 billion annually on medical technology, however the various pathways can be confusing, as acknowledged by vice-chairman of the AHSN Network, Piers Ricketts:
‘There is a risk of companies getting lost as they navigate the innovation maze. Within this report we have set out how, as a network, we can help developers navigate through a MedTech innovation pathway to support patients, clinicians and UK plc.”
