AHSN survey reveals local research and innovation challenges

A recent AHSN survey reveals local stakeholder concerns regarding workforce challenges, mental health and care integration.

The Academic Health Science Networks (AHSN) has published results from a recent survey of over 300 local health and social care stakeholders, revealing their views regarding NHS innovation and research needs.

The survey reveals several common challenges faced across regions:

  • ‘a need for innovation and research addressing workforce challenges
  • delivery of mental health services and providing care for patients with mental health needs, particularly in children and young people
  • integrating services to provide effective care for patients with complex needs, including multimorbidity and frailty.’

The findings will be now be discussed with patients and the wider public and published in statements of ‘NHS research and innovation needs’ specific to each AHSN area. The publication of such statements fulfils an action point from a joint paper between NHS England and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) entitled ‘12 Actions to Support Research in the NHS’.
