Government announces preferred Chair of NICE Board

Sharmila Nebhrajani OBE has been announced as the Government’s preferred candidate for the next National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Chair.

If appointed, Ms Nebhrajani will take over from Tim Irish who has been an Acting Chair in the interim since January 2020, after Sir David Haslam stepped down in 2019, making her the third ever substantive Chair of the NICE Board.

Ms Nebhrajani has had a number of roles related to health, including being the Chair of the Human Tissue Authority and Chief Executive of the Association of Medical Research, Director of External Affairs of the Medical Research Council and Deputy Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.

Currently she is the Chief Executive of Wilton Park, which organises events to facilitate strategic discussion about global issues.

It is understood that Ms Nebhrajani will be interviewed by the Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee ahead of a final decision by the Secretary of State on her appointment.

More on the announcement is available from the Health Service Journal.
