This week Baroness Blackwood’s replacement both as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and as the Government health spokesperson in the House of Lords was announced as James Bethell.

Lord Bethell, 5th Baron Bethell, was elevated to the House of Lords in 2018 following a hereditary peers’ by-election, and has previously served as a Government Whip in the Lords.

Prior to joining the House of Lords, Lord Bethell working as a journalist and businessman, including as Managing Director of the Ministry of Sound and managing director and managing partner of Westbourne Communications and Portland Communications.

The exact distribution of responsibilities within the Department is still being decided at time of writing, but our expectation is that Lord Bethell will retain responsibility for life sciences and rare medicines.
