NHS England delays structural changes

NHS England has decided to delay structural changes under the new ODS code format implementation until at least September 2020.

The delay is seen as necessary in the NHS avoiding non-critical activity, though it recognises this will have to be done at some point. NHS Digital’s Organisation Data Service (ODS) says:

“Implementing the new format remains essential due to the pending exhaustion of available codes within existing structures. However, the current rate of code usage means there are enough remaining codes for use for the time being.

“ODS recognise that considerable efforts have been made to prepare for the changes in time for 1 April 2020. However, in light of the unprecedented pressures the NHS could face in coming weeks and months, it is felt that a delay is the only sensible approach.”

Changes to be implemented include changing the NHS regional structure in England, merging CCGs, and creating Commissioning Hubs.
