The NHS Test and Trace service, designed to identify, contain and control COVID-19, has launched across England.
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by the service and asked to share information about household members and people with whom they have been in direct contact. Those identified will be instructed to stay at home for 14 days. Reflecting an increase in testing capabilities, all individuals are now eligible for testing if required.
In addition to test and trace, a national Joint Biosecurity Centre will work with local authorities and public health teams in Public Health England to identify localised outbreaks and support effective local responses. Local authorities have been given £300 million of new funding to support this.
