Cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, and those recovering from coronavirus, will be provided with devices and apps to monitor their health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
NHS England has announced the move as shielding measures make it more difficult for these patients to maintain contact with clinicians.
CF patients aged six or over will be given a spirometer and app, so that their doctors can measure their lung capacity over time. Personalised care at home represents a significant step in improving care for these patients.
Sir Simon Stevens, NHS England Chief Executive, said:
“For patients and their families living with cystic fibrosis this is a landmark moment, offering people vital health help at home.
“The COVID-19 outbreak has hit every household in the country but for some people with certain conditions, this virus will have been especially unsettling and dangerous, which is why the NHS is looking to make sure those at greatest risk can get safe, tailored care, despite the ongoing pandemic threat.”
