Spahn begins German EU Council Presidency with health minister meeting

Jens Spahn, Health Minister of Germany, has begun his programme of activities for Germany’s EU Council Presidency with an informal meeting of the EU health ministers.

The 27 countries of the EU were represented, and a range of important issues were discussed. Mr Spahn said:

“The corona pandemic has once again shown us Europeans how important it is to stand together in an emergency. In order to ward off dangers together, it is imperative that we prepare better. Europe must become more independent of other countries in the production of important pharmaceuticals. And we need a robust, better-equipped European health crisis agency. This is the only way that it can react quickly and support the Member States in an emergency. Together we can strengthen Europe’s defences.”

The ministers pushed three major areas of policy:

  • To strengthen the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to better handle international health issues
  • To work towards bringing pharmaceutical manufacturing to Europe and strengthen supply chains
  • To enhance digitalisation of health around Europe
