AMA pushes for transparency in coronavirus vaccine effort

The American Medical Association (AMA) has cautioned the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure its assessment of vaccines for COVID-19 is transparent.

AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James L. Madara, has written to the FDA Commissioner, saying:

“With COVID-19 vaccine development moving at a rapid pace, it is critical that we ensure physicians are continuously informed of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) plans for review and that they are provided with the utmost level of transparency regarding the process for authorization or licensure, standards for review, and safety and efficacy data as soon as possible”

The AMA is concerned about the high levels of vaccine denial and mistrust amongst Americans. While a vaccine will be a crucial component of the long-term fight against coronavirus, it is equally important to boost the public’s confidence in science, and the work of the FDA. Without widespread uptake of the vaccine, it will not be effective.
