Surge in Irish exports due to increased demand for medicines and pharmaceutical products

The latest trade figures show the value of goods exports increased by 6% in August by €847 million to €14 billion.

The increase was driven by exports of medical and pharmaceutical products which rose by 12% to €5 billion. Exports of organic chemicals rose by almost 60% to €2.4 billion.

The rise is linked to increased production to meet soaring demand for products linked to treatments for COVID-19 and stockpiling of medicines in anticipation of possible supply chain disruption.

Pharmaceutical and chemical exports account for 40 to 50% of the total Irish goods exports, worth over €70 billion a year.
