Executive and Legislative Powers in France
The French Political system is a semi-presidential system which is also known as the Fifth Republic. In France the President of the Republic is elected for five years by direct vote. The President is then responsible for appointing the Prime Minister and Ministers.
However, as only the National Assembly has the power to dismiss the Prime Ministers government, the President must choose a Prime Minister who is able to gain the support of a majority in the assembly. The Prime Minister is responsible for directing the Government who determine the policy of the nation. The Prime Minister also has the right of legislative initiative.
